zC's 100 Games To Play Before You Die: Pt. 1
Published 2009-04-26 6:00PMWelcome to the first instalment of zConnection's 100 Games To Play Before You Die, where we will be giving you the low-down of the 100 games (in no particular order) that any self-respecting gamer must play before their personal “Game Over”. From Asteroids to Half-Life, Bust-A-Move to The Longest Journey, expect to see a few familiar faces... and a few unfamiliar ones.
The Legend of Zelda

The very first entry in Nintendo's fabled Legend of Zelda franchise, predictably titled The Legend of Zelda, was released in the West in 1987 and most gamers remember it with endearment. With a relatively huge world which gamers were free to explore (remembering this game is far before the likes of Oblivion) and a few clever puzzles, every gamer should play this at least once, even if it is a bit dated.
Unlike later games in the series, the main character, Link, does not interact with other people in the game beyond receiving a sword from a reclusive cave-man wizard and purchasing bombs and maps from other reclusive cave-men. Exactly how the people of Hyrule evolved from cave-dwellers into the civilisation seen in Zelda II: Adventure of Link is unclear, although the people of the land likely made a unanimous decision to build houses because the caves were too cold in the Winter.
Although originally released on the NES (or Famicom in Japan), The Legend of Zelda proved so successful that it has since been re-released on Nintendo's ill-fated Virtual Boy, the Game Boy Advance, the GameCube (as part of a Wind Waker pre-order gift) and the Wii's Virtual Console download service.
This concludes the first part of our 100 Games To Play Before You Die list. Check back daily for the next parts! If you wish to be notified when the next part becomes available, please register.
