zC's 100 Games To Play Before You Die: Pt. 21

Published 2009-05-16 6:00PM

Welcome to the twenty-first part of zConnection’s 100 Games To Play Before You Die, where we will be giving you a low-down of the 100 games (in no particular order) that any self-respecting gamer must play before their personal “Game Over”. From Asteroids to Half-Life, Bust-A-Move to The Longest Journey, expect to see a few familiar faces… and a few unfamiliar ones.

Before we get into today’s game, I’d like to take this time to make a special announcement. After the conclusion of the 100-day period over which these articles are being published, a compendium featuring all 100 parts will be released in book form. It will be available exclusively form the upcoming zConnection store (along with a plethora of other merchandise), so you better hoard all your rupees, gold and gil in anticipation of that frabjous day.

Prince of Persia
Prince of Persia

The original 1989 Prince of Persia lacked a lot of the gameplay mechanics which define the franchise today. Wall running, time stopping, and extremely unrealistic combat all became prominent elements only in 2003’s The Sands of Time. The game is a lot more like a traditional platformer (albeit with more deadly spikes and sword-fighting warriors), and puts players in the shoes of a nameless prince of Ancient Persia, who has to save the Persian princess from the Sultan’s vizier, Jaffar.

With amazingly fluid 2D graphics, a brilliant combat system, and memorable MIDI music, Prince of Persia remains one of my favourite platformers of the period. And perhaps the countless remakes, ports and sequels serve as testament to the franchise’s success. In fact, a film adaptation of The Sands of Time starring Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, The Day After Tomorrow) has been filmed and scheduled for a UK release on May 28th 2010.

With that, we conclude the twenty-first part of our article. Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for the twenty-second part!
