zC's 100 Games To Play Before You Die: Pt. 23
Published 2009-05-18 8:00PMWelcome to the twenty-third part of zConnection’s 100 Games To Play Before You Die, where we will be giving you a low-down of the 100 games (in no particular order) that any self-respecting gamer must play before their personal “Game Over”. From Asteroids to Half-Life, Bust-A-Move to The Longest Journey, expect to see a few familiar faces… and a few unfamiliar ones.
Cave Story

Cave Story may be a little lesser known than the other games on this list, as it was never published commercially, existing only as an Internet-distributed indie platformer made in the style of classic NES games. Entirely programmed, scored and animated by Japanese man Daisuke Amaya, also known under the psudonym Pixel, over a period of around 5 years.
Players take control of Quote, the game’s silent protagonist, who awakens in a cave with no recollection of how he came to be there. Emerging onto the surface into a village inhabited by rabbit-like beings called Mimigas, who are constantly begin persecuted by the Doctor, master of the Demon Crown. Unfortunately, two of the Doctor's cronies attempt to kidnap one of these Mimigas, and in true crony style, they capture the wrong person. Quote then takes it upon himself to free this miscaptured Mimiga.
Arguably the best indie game of all time, Cave Story has reached almost legendary status. Originally in Japanese, it was quickly translated by devoted fans desperate to play the game in English. A WiiWare port is also being worked on, which will be released in Europe and North America sometime this year. Keep an eye out for it!
This concludes the twenty-third part of our article. Check back tomorrow for the twenty-fourth part!
